A couple of Danny’s discs have crossed my desk in the last 5 years or so, and his growth as an artist is easy to see as his songs and albums have become more confident and mature over time.
This new disc comes with the backing of a significant independent label (Red House Records) and is likely to be the disc that brings Danny to a wider audience.
Danny’s previous albums have been good albums, but very intense and this made them a little inaccessible to many people, but on ‘Instead the Forest Rose to Sing’ the mixture of songs, melodies and arrangements have come together to make a disc that is both lyrically deep, melody rich and instantly appealing.
The whole album has a theme of money and how we view money in our society, and across the 10 songs he addresses this theme in various ways, some tracks explore the various perspectives of wealth, while other songs are character pieces with vivid portraits of protagonists and their search for meaningful lives.
Danny’s style mixes folk, Americana and indie-roots styles, and with the help of Mark Hallman producing the disc (Eliza Gilkyson, Ani DiFranco) he’s settled down on a style that allows the lyrics to shine amongst a backdrop of well arranged instrumentation. He provides the acoustic guitar and vocals himself and Hallman adds a wide range of instrumentation across the album and he’s joined by a number of other musicians including Carrie Elkin and Elana James.
Those who gravitate towards thoughtful American singer/songwriters such as Jeffrey Foucault, Mark Erelli and Richard Shindell will find much to reward them with this excellent album from a young artist who has produced an album that marks him out as significant talent.
