Male/female duo Blackheart have been steadily picking up fans over their two short years on the British contemporary folk scene; and while they are a British act they have much more in common with North American acts as their sound has a distinct Country influence that echoes artists such as Gretchen Peters and Sarah McLachlan.
The smart, easy on the ear melody led songs are instantly likable, and the standard is set by the catchy 'Wonderland', an ear-candy melody that also carries a strong lyric; and this pattern of interesting words and catchy hooks continues throughout the 12 songs.
All tracks are written by the duo of Chrissy Mostyn and Richard Pilkington, and the mature lyrics, beautifully crafted arrangements and powerful melodies all come together to create an album that really stands out from the pack. Add to this appropriate instrumentation, including excellent piano and guitar amongst others and the package becomes a compelling, intelligent and likable mix
'Indigo' is an album full of excellent songs that affect the listener in many ways, the real standouts are the lower key songs, including 'Flowers for Tomorrow' and 'Blue Flowers for Tomorrow' two parallel songs of lost love from either perspective, and '94 Years' a touching song of regret for the words not spoken.
Emotive issues they may be, but the way they're presented makes this an album that flows well and is a pleasure to listen to over repeated listens.
'Blackheart' present well written intelligent songs that really deserve to find a wide audience in the UK, very highly recommended.
