Yet another Red House release this month (along with John Gorka and the 'Nod to Bob compilation), 'Hard Times in Babylon' is described as "the diary of a season of love and loss", but the whole disc is much more fun and upbeat than that description suggests.
From the opener 'Beauty Way', an excellent track about the life of a working singer/songwriter, to the final song the positive 'Sanctuary', the disc is filled with memorable melodies and excellent lyrics.
It's mainly acoustic based, but there are some excellent contrasts as the 12 tracks shift between ballads and rockier songs - throughout the disc the acoustic guitar work is superb; varied, skilful, and it always suits the mood of the lyrics.
Her vocals are crystal clear, expressive and very easy to listen to, she sings without unnecessary affectation or embellishment.
'Hard Times in Babylon' is an excellent album - those who've enjoyed the Carrie Newcomer and Suzzy Roche discs over the past few months will find much to enjoy here.
