Gretchen is a US based singer/songwriter whose name will be familiar to many - not as a performer but as a writer; artists such as Martina McBride, Faith Hill and Bonnie Raitt amongst others have covered her works. This album has less of a country feel than that list hints at, and is best likened to contemporary singer/songwriters such as Shawn Colvin and Sarah McLachlan.
As you might expect, it's the songwriting that stands out, it's a disc full of intelligent lyrics backed with flawless melodies. She covers some disparate subjects, and a range of musical styles over the 11 songs, from the brilliant storytelling on 'Lillies of the Fields, a narrative of the relationship between two sorry characters, to 'Souvenirs' which is part social commentary and part love song.
Although primarily known as a provider of songs, judging by the results here she should certainly keep more to herself - she has a clear, unaffected voice and moves comfortably and convincingly across the different song styles on offer.
Curiously, Gretchen has more of a following in the UK than the US, this means we are lucky enough to get the album months before the US - but it won't be long before Gretchen becomes more widely known in both.
The disc has elements that will appeal to everyone, and those who enjoy quality music of any genre should look no further. A truly first rate album.
