There's an element of surprise with every new release from The Kennedys, the albums are all consistently strong, but they never rest on their musical laurels, each album introduces new elements to their music, but builds on what has gone before in their previous albums. 'Get it Right' is no exception, the distinctive guitar sound and harmonies are still present, but they switch between a wide range of style over the 11 songs. Notably, the excellent title track doffs its cap in Marvin Gaye's direction, and 'Ride, Angel, Ride', and 'Why, Winona Why?', both have a great 60s sound - but despite all this everything is distinctively individual and definitely the Kennedys own.
Nanci Griffith features twice on the disc, as co-writer on the excellent 'Pearls Eye View' (a wonderful biographical song), and as backing vocalist on the Rickenbacker led 'Ride, Angel, Ride'.
Maura's voice is really strong on this album - she has a distinctive voice but switches between styles with ease, everything sounds natural and unforced, it really is a good overall vocal performance. Add to this the superb guitar work from Pete, and it all adds up to a disc of real quality at every turn. Those with access to a computer will find a full video for 'Nickeltown' along with photos, liner notes etc. - a great addition to an excellent and eclectic collection.
