After a good number of years as a member of Colorado based 'Leftover Salmon', Drew has gained a reputation as one of the best and most innovative mandolin players around. This, his first solo album, is a real showcase for his full array of musical talents - writer, vocalist, and instrumentalist.
He's joined by some of the best acoustic musicians from the 'newgrass' scene, the core musicians are the brilliant John Cowan Band, but it's the many guests that really catch the eye (and ear) - Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Ronnie McCoury, and Vassar Clements to pick just four from the list.
As with many albums from the bluegrass/newgrass genre, 'Freedom Ride' is easy to listen to, the songs are melodically very strong, and the quality of the playing is incredible.
The majority of the songs are Emmitt originals, with a few covers thrown into the mix, most notably a brilliant interpretation of Dylan's 'Tangled up in Blue', complete with wonderful fiddle and mandolin accompaniment.
The title track manages to sum the album up perfectly - dynamic, melodic, strong writing and singing, and with some truly excellent (and subtle) playing.
'Freedom Ride' is one of the best albums of the current newgrass genre - easy to enjoy, and like the Alison Krauss discs, has mass appeal outside its own specialist market.
