Critically acclaimed as one of the bands leading North American folk, the youthful, no-holds barred approach of The Duhks continues to evolve and take in even more influences than their previous 3 albums.
Although still one of the world’s most exciting string-bands, with new front-woman and vocalist Sarah Dugas on board, they’ve become even more versatile and have added a more soulful edge to an already eclectic and diverse sound.
What has remained from their earlier albums is the easy-going, laid back atmosphere – the band are extremely accomplished musicians and manage to integrate traditional folk songs with self written pieces with ease.
Where in the past they have been compared other young string bands such as Nickel Creek and The Mammals, this new album pushes them more towards a sound of their own, and even though the tracks here cover a huge range of styles the banjo of Leonard Podolak and the fiddle of Tania Elizabeth are the constants that give the Duhks their distinct identity. Add to this range of guitars from Jordan McConnell and the varied percussion of Christian Dugas and you have a band that can easily move from quiet pieces to all out rockers.
The 12 songs are a mixture of trad arrs, a couple of covers, and the balance come from the members of the band with Sarah Dugas providing 4 songs, including the title track, and a beautiful French track ‘Toujours Vouloir’.
This album cements The Duhks as one of the finest and most exciting groups around, their range of influences and fantastic skill make them a band with something for everyone – highly recommended.
