Evolver is the follow up to 1998's 'Angel Fire' and this disc continues their unique sound - melody based folk/pop that blends three decades of influences together to produce a hugely enjoyable disc. Their music style is certainly their own - they meld pop influences with intelligent and challenging lyrics, and it's a delivered with a firm folk/acoustic undercurrent - the description "coffeehouse pop" seems a good fit. This results in an album that is instantly likeable, memorable and most importantly, enjoyable. These 14 new tracks showcase the talents of the band - Maura has a sweet voice and sings with a good feel for the individual tracks, she adapts her style to suit. Pete is an excellent guitarist who wears his influences on his sleeves; throughout the disc you hear echoes of other guitar players in amongst his guitar work. Overall, this is an exceptional disc, it's fun from start to finish and is chock full of strong melodies. It's a little off the beaten track, but it's well worth checking out, a real find.
