This is a compilation from one of the finest and most respected acoustic singer/songwriters around, it’s been a while since the last album was released (‘Sylivia Hotel’ in 1999), so this career-spanning compilation is especially welcome.
Her studio albums are usually a mixture of styles, from beautifully constructed traditional singer/songwriter material, to whimsical numbers right through to serious social commentaries. This compilation concentrates on the first of these, creating a flow to the disc, but this also means it features the consistently strong material. The track listing covers all of her 16yr recording career, and includes two new songs that sit well amongst the 17 proven tracks that make up the remainder of the disc.
The songwriting is exceptional; she’s a fantastic storyteller who brings real depth to the characters and locations in her songs. This songwriting skill is evident by the quality of artists who have chosen to cover her songs, Linda Thompson, Maura O’Connell and Suzy Boguss being just three, and there have been at least two major chart successes for covers of her material. If you don’t Cheryl’s work, this collection will be a real treat – a superb introduction to one of the best (if not the most prolific) singer/songwriters around.
