Brought up in the West Country folk scene of the 1990s, DBG (Dan Goddard) counts the Lakeman brothers (Sam, Sean & Seth) as friends and as one of the catalysts for the start of his musical expedition. This, his debut album, is the result of a journey that has taken him as far as South America and has taken 2 years for the songs to be put together and recorded. Although Dan has excellent folk credentials, with credits on albums from both Seth Lakeman and Cara Dillon, this album takes a different approach, sounding less traditional than you might expect.
In essence this is a contemporary singer/songwriter disc that nods towards the 70s with harmonies and production that has an obvious link to artists such as Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills & Nash.
This warm, melody led sound suits his songs well, the songs are intelligently written with personal, often poetry like lyrics that while occasionally dark are fascinating to listen to.
DBG is a talented guitarist who plays acoustic, 12-string and electric guitars throughout and Sam & Sean Lakeman provide accompaniment on a couple of songs.
With the melody led songs there are many highlights over the 12 songs, with the standouts being the opener ‘Sandy Lawn’, ‘Falling Man’ & ‘Chances’.
