If you judge people by the company they keep, then Pete Nelson will be of interest to many - he is joined by Dar Williams, Patty Larkin, Cliff Eberhardt and Peter Mulvey amongst others on this new release. To concentrate on the guest list would be a mistake - it's the quality and sincerity of Pete's writing that is the real star of the show.
'Days Like Horses' is subtitled 'A Novel in Fifteen Songs', and the 15 tracks chart the course of the main character through a love lost and the feelings that go with this, from denial to anger to acceptance.
Musically, it's mainly acoustic singer/songwriter material, but he throws everything into the mix on some songs, and there are many surprises to be found here (not least the Caribbean influences on one track and the Tony Bennett-esque 'It Still Makes Me Smile')
As you would imagine though, the lyrics take centre stage, Pete is superb at the narrative ballad, and expresses feelings and situations with great skill, he always catches the moment perfectly.
"…Days Like Horses is an outstanding disc; candid, open and human - a real treat..."
"…America's best undiscovered songwriter…"
