'Compass & Companion' is one of the discs we've been looking forward to for a long time - Mark's self-titled 1999 debut release is a favourite of ours, it's a brilliant album that was universally well received. This new disc steps up another gear and delivers on the promises the first disc offered.
It kicks off with a tremendous sequence of 5 songs; the opener 'Ghost' has a wide open sound to start, the layers build up as the track progresses, but everything is restrained and controlled, allowing his distinct voice and acoustic guitar work to shine through. The it's straight in to the album's title track, a roots/rock duet with Kelly Willis - it's a superb track, and with any justice one that will coming to a radio near you very soon. Right through to the closing guitar work of the final track 'Almost Home', the disc never loses its control; there is real quality in each of the 11 songs, and they all have depth to ensure they sound just as good over repeated plays.
The album has lots of variety, and has a change of pace in all the right places, moving from rockier numbers to acoustic ballads with ease. Helping out musically are Duke Levine, Rani Arbo and Jim Lamond, the production of Lorne Entress is wonderful - understated and subtle, but with detail everywhere you look.
'Compass & Companion' is a genuinely impressive and memorable disc, great songs and excellent musicians, it's a combination that can't fail. Mark is a young writer and performer whose stock is on the rise, he's making a real name for himself, and this disc will deservedly increase his profile.
"…a powerful new voice in American Music…"
