While this may be Christina’s debut disc, it’s an assured and confident album with a strong mixture of self-written tracks and well chosen covers.
Being brought up between the US and the UK has a subtle but noticeable influence on her musical style, it’s open and acoustic with identifiable folk and country influences complete with lyrics that are honest and contemporary.
The whole disc has a beautifully light feel to it; this is mainly due to the excellent production from David Ogilvy and the perfect instrumentation which is based around a mix of acoustic guitar, mandolin, pedal steel and drums; this simplicity gives the 13 song set and earthy and traditional sound.
Her delicate vocals are sweet and really draw the listener into the lyrics, this is best demonstrated on the opener ‘The Dishes’ which is a thoughtful tale of a character tied to, and held back by domestic life.
This is an excellent debut album from a talented singer/songwriter, and while it may appear light and unassuming at first, this is an engaging and enjoyable collection full of excellent songs and beautiful arrangements.
