The third album from distinctive Northampton, MA quintet builds on the success of the dreamy lyrics and harmonies of their previous discs, and delivers another engaging mix of clever vocal interplay and imaginative arrangements all held together by pop-like melodies and hooks.
Like their earlier albums this is a collection of sophisticated songs, that while modern in their approach have a genuine timeless quality, and there are certainly songs and performances on ‘Central Chambers’ that evoke some classic vocal groups of years gone by. The vocals of Philip Price and Flora Reed are mesmerising in places, the smooth delivery of Price is effortless and his vocal exchanges with Reed give them their unique sound.
They’re obviously influenced by the 60s, but not to the extent that this is homage to music past; for every layered harmony that evokes the Mamas and Papas there’s an element of lo-fi production, and for every nod to the Beatles there’s contemporary crisp and clean recording. Where these influences are present, there’s equally no argument that Winterpills are unique and individual on the contemporary music scene.
The songs have a loose theme of the frailty of humanity and life, but it’s by no means downbeat or relentless as the melodies and arrangements are generally uplifting; but to focus on either of these would be somewhat missing the point, the album works well as a complete piece of work, where the instruments, vocals, words and harmonies all have equal billing and all become essential parts of the whole atmosphere.
This atmosphere is created by the considered arrangements of the band that includes acoustic and electric guitars, reed organ, drums, keyboards and more; it’s impressive that the band use fairly traditional instrumentation to get their unique sound.
‘Central Chambers’ is a fascinating album, on first listen it may appear a little light and unsubstantial, but over the course of 2 or 3 plays it really delivers – it’s a warm, engaging and beautiful album. Ultimately, this is a beautiful album, but it’s not like anything else out there, so if you’re looking for something a little different, but full of quality, then this comes unreservedly recommended.
