Spiky, sharp-edged alternative rock with a pure pop heart that's quite an achievement by the New York City-based singer-songwriter, Heather Eatman. 'Candy & Dirt' is her second album (she debuted with 'Mascara Falls' on John Prine's Oh Boy label) and it's something special. Heather's vocals, deceptively fey-sounding yet totally upfront, are strong enough to demand the listener's complete attention. The hook-laden, guitar-based (though never in an obvious way) songs, unusual and refreshing - and immediately appealing - are good enough to yield additional rewards upon repeated play. The overall sound is much fuller than most singer/songwriter releases; she eschews the usual acoustic ground and uses a full band throughout the album. This creates some memorable moments; the musicians are all excellent, and the sublime backing vocals in "Great White Hope" and the double bass in "Driving Darlene" are worth the entry fee alone.
She is without doubt original and imaginative, the range of situations and scenarios she deals with is remarkable and the whole set is delivered with panache and wit. The major labels will surely be beating a path to Heather's door in response to this self-released collection, and doubtless the rest of the world will duly catch up with us early birds. Until then, checking out the excellent 'Candy & Dirt' will entitle you to feel real smug.
