Norma's first two solo albums are excellent, but this release of traditional is even better - consistent across the board, with huge variety on the 12 songs.
The material is a mixture of well known, and not so well known songs - but even those that are familiar sound fresh and new, the interpretations are top notch and the use of instrumentation excellent throughout.
All the songs here are about love or lust, and the feelings and emotions in the songs are all relevant and understandable today (even though the settings may have changed over the last few hundred years).
Produced by Eliza Carthy, the disc sounds superb, there's real variety in the instrumentation, and Norma's voice is perfect for these songs, particularly on 'Game of All Fours', the unaccompanied vocals are truly compelling.
Add excellent liner notes into the equation and 'Bright Shiny Morning' is an attractive package.
For those who haven't yet taken the plunge into traditional folk, or those who want to try more after enjoying Kate Rusby's albums, then this would be a great choice.
