Johnsmith is an established and understated contemporary folk singer/songwriter, this is the first disc of his to come our way, but it will definitely lead us to investigate his previous albums.
He's reminiscent of Pierce Pettis in both vocal and writing style, and like Pierce's albums this collection is easy to enjoy with very strong lyrics and an accessible, hook-laden melodies.
Smith is joined on the disc by a host of great musicians including Tim O'Brien, Darrell Scott, Andrea Zonn, Stuart Duncan and Suzi Ragsdale, and the 12 tracks are full of beautiful performances from all.
Despite the memorable instrumentation it's the lyrics that really stand out - he's a honest and open writer and the many of the songs are full of genuine feeling and emotion without every becoming trite or overly mushy. Highlights include 'Pothole Season', 'Silver Creek' and the stunning 'Cold Cold Ground'.
'Break Me Open' is a considered and thoughtful album - it's not showy or flashy but is a collection of some of the highest quality singer/songwriter songs around.
