Jennie’s previous album ‘Sing Desire’ was (and still is) one of the real ‘sleeper’ discs that we carry – overlooked by the majority, but loved by those who discovered it either through Fish Records or from the few spins Bob Harris gave it on his Radio 2 show.
Her new album carries on in a similar vein to the previous album in that it’s a collection of delicate, sweet and earthy songs with maturity and depth. While probably best described as acoustic alt-country as it has obvious roots to the acoustic work of Neil Young, but her style is distinct and the songs and overall feel of the disc is free and organic.
She has a small, but very fine band led by multi-instrumentalist Gurf Morlix (who also handles all the production duties) and Rick Richards on percussion, the only other artist present is Jim Lauderdale who provides vocal support on a couple of tracks. This stripped down approach suits the material perfectly, allowing the melody heavy tunes and dreamy delivery to wash over the listener, and her clam voice with it’s longing edge brings the lyrics to the fore.
Songs such as the title track, ‘Everything’ and ‘Step into the Picture’ show Jennie at her best, strong poetic ballads with a country/folk edge that are instantly likeable but with real depth. Highly recommended.
