A well respected solo artist in her own right, Beth Nielsen Chapman is best known for her songs recorded by mainstream artists- having written songs for the likes of Faith Hill, Emmlylou Harris and Trisha Yearwood.
But despite her Nashville base and her writing history, this album isn’t a country disc it’s a more traditional acoustic pop/folk album but with grown-up and thoughtful lyrics. Her status and respect in the industry has enabled her to put together some high-profile co-writes with Benmont Tench, Darrell Scott and regular collaborator Annie Roboff.
This album is all about her smooth and powerful voice, the quality of the writing and pacing of the disc – it’s unashamedly full of hooks and over the course of the 11 songs there’s not a track won’t leave an impression. Her personal struggles and tragedies are well documented, but ‘Back to Love’ is a positive and at times joyous album, that has an instant appeal.
Beautifully produced and presented, the album is put together using a majority of acoustic instruments and the styles range from simple acoustic guitar tracks through to more produced songs. While there may be some richer sounding tracks, it never goes over the top, and they fit in beautifully over the course of an album to create good pacing and variety.
This is a varied and accessible folk/pop album that has much to offer – if you’re looking for acoustic singer/songwriter material then it may not be for you, but ‘Back to Love’ is an excellent disc that is accessible, familiar and very easy to enjoy.
