Although best known for her work with Jennifer Kimball in ‘The Story’, Jonatha’s solo albums are all excellent and she’s certainly worthy of her reputation as one of the best contemporary singer/songwriters around.
The title track provides a link back to her earlier work as it develops the story of the character used in ‘Damn Everything but the Circus’, and this new track finds the protagonist weary from the ups and downs of the road and failed romance – it’s a beautifully melancholic track that sets the theme for the opening songs.
A number of the tracks may have downbeat and poignant themes, but the overall feel of the album is upbeat with strong instrumentation including acoustic and electric guitars, accordion, Wurlitzer and the occasional drum loop that give this disc a contemporary folk/pop feel.
There are many highlights amongst the eleven songs, in particular the opening sequence of 4 songs is stunning, they cover a general theme of love and loss and they set the standard for the songwriting throughout the disc.
‘Back in the Circus’ is a wonderful album, strong songwriting and excellent vocals combine with innovative and interesting arrangements to make this a compelling collection.
