We featured Alice's self released debut in a previous mailer, and in the intervening time Alice has obviously been very busy - this new release is now on a major label (Sony), and it's a big step up from the debut album in every respect.
What hasn't changed though is her approach - she's a smart songwriter who delivers her songs in a folk/pop style similar to Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin-Carpenter. The main difference comes in the musical depth and the care and attention that time and the backing of a major label brings. Almost all of the tracks feature electric and acoustic guitars, giving the disc a full sound, with the more upbeat tracks ('Bliss' & 'Into the Light') featuring layered guitars and lots of harmony vocals - this sound gives the disc instant appeal and there are a couple of songs that could potentially be released as singles, the excellent 'Leading With My Heart' is a strong contender.
Despite the major label and commercial approach this is definitely a singer/songwriter disc, Alice wrote or co-wrote all 13 songs here, and the musicians helping out include John Gorka (vocals) and Buddy Mondlock (co-writer).
As with Colvin and Chapin-Carpenter it would be a mistake to write this album off because of the commercial appeal and the major label - Peacock is a real talent, a strong songwriter with an excellent voice and an ear for great melodies. She's certainly on her way to critical and commercial success in the future, and is a name to remember……..
