Following a few dates in the UK in early 2007 we ended up with a copy of David’s current album ‘After the Wrecking Ships’; it’s an album from 2004 and it took a good few months to iron out the details of carrying it through Fish Records….so while we may be a little late (almost 3 years), at least we got there eventually!
It’s obviously going to be new to almost everyone in the UK, so let go of any prejudice you may have about it not being ‘new’ and open your mind to what is a beautiful singer/songwriter disc.
With a degree from Harvard in literature and philosophy you’d be forgiven for expecting well constructed and thoughtful lyrics (and that’s what you get), but the musical approach and construction of the songs is what really separates him from the contemporary singer/songwriter pack. Rather than just focussing on an acoustic guitar backing, the album has a fuller and more contemporary feel than most – it still uses much of the traditional instrumentation in guitar (acoustic & electric), mandolin, percussion, bass, but the arrangement and excellent production makes it feel fresher than many singer/songwriter albums.
There’s continuity across the 13 songs that gives the album a lazy flow from start to finish; much of this is down to David’s smooth vocals that are effortlessly relaxed throughout. His delivery may be easy but the album is packed full of dynamics and unforced emotion that highlight the strong lyrics.
While the album is accessible, full of great hooks and easy to enjoy, those looking for songs that challenge the listener will find much to get their teeth into here as the lyrics are thoughtful and beautifully crafted.
After repeated plays over a few months I know the album really well, and there are many highlights; ‘Red’ has a great lyric and memorable chorus, ‘Fire Sign’ is a delicate and powerful song, but ‘Jefferson’ stands out as the strongest song and it sums the disc up perfectly, exceptional lyrics, infectious melody and a controlled vocal delivery full of feeling – it’s a stunning track.
‘After the Wrecking Ships’ is a super piece of work of real substance that has a wide appeal, it’s a rare combination and it’s makes this an album not to be missed.
