One of the most understated and under-rated contemporary singer/songwriters around - over the past 10 years or so he's put out a selection of albums that sound as good today as the day they were recorded - this is simple, honest, folk influenced singer/songwriter material of the highest order.
This new collection sees James looking back at the tradition, with a fine selection of traditional pieces sitting alongside songs inspired by the tradition. Well known pieces (Farewell to the Gold, Bonny Light Horseman) sit alongside interesting less well known songs and one excellent contemporary co-write between James and Jez Lowe.
While the 10 tracks focus on James and his acoustic guitar, the list of musicians playing on the disc reads like a who’s who on modern folk and he’s joined by Danu, Ruth Moody (from the Wailin’ Jennys), James Fagan, Nancy Kerr, Stephen Fearing and Jez Lowe; these musicians add some superb musical touches throughout the disc.
Thoughtful and beautifully put together ‘A Few Simple Verses’ revels in the tradition and allows the power of the songs to shine through – it’s a wonderful album that’s easily accessible, and an essential addition to the collections of those interested in singer/songwriters and folk.
