As a family band The Deighton’s were well respected and admired both in the US and at home in the UK; sisters Rosalie and Kathleen were part of the Intuition album (with Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts) in the 93, and since then Rosalie has gone on to produce a couple of solo albums. The latest of the pair is ’21 Days’, a beautifully soft acoustic folk / singer-songwriter album full of effortless melodies and smooth vocals.
All the songs are Rosalie’s own or are co-written with other writers such as Boo Hewerdine, and the songs are classic singer/songwriter studies of real life with perhaps a leaning towards the more melancholic and dark aspects of everyday living. While lyrically it may be a little downbeat, the vocals are the opposite – her singing throughout is sweet and smooth and the melodies are instantly comfortable and memorable; the combination of the lyrics, vocals and melodies gives a rounded and complete experience.
While acoustic guitar dominates, there’s a wide range of backing that’s used over the 11 songs including Hammond, violin, cittern, cello, harp and national steel, all provided by an excellent selection of musicians including Hewerdine, John McCusker, Fran Healy and Dave Marks.
21 Days is the perfect summer album, the melodies are pure ear candy and the lyrics are solid singer/songwriter fare – it may not be the most lyrically challenging album available in 2007, but it’s a fine disc full of solid songs with beautiful vocals and exceptional melodies, and it’s an album that certainly deserves to be heard.
