Fish Records Mailer - Issue 42

Our end of year mailer is traditionally a rundown of the discs that have come over the past 12 months, but the quality of the new releases available towards the end of 2006 means we’ve had to change our plans. There are some brilliant albums here, in particular the albums from Brett Dennen, Mindy Smith and AJ Roach, but there’s depth throughout all the discs listed.
Many thanks for all your supprt throughout the year, it’s always appreciated

Brett Dennen - So Much More

The opening strains of ‘Ain’t No Reason’ will certainly make you sit up and pay attention on the first listen through – Dennen’s vocals are astonishing as he has a very female sounding voice and singing style, immediately bringing to mind both Billie Holiday.... full review

Mindy Smith - Long Island Shores

Mindy’s superb debut album ‘One Moment More’ was universally well received and marked her out as a folk/country singer/songwriter to watch, but it also came with the fear that her follow up disc may see her just becoming another.... full review

AJ Roach - Revelation

Like his excellent debut disc this is a contemporary singer/songwriter album with its roots firmly in the Appalachian Mountains, the singing style and instrumentation can be easily linked to the region’s history, but he’s certainly no slave to the tradition..... full review

The Duhks - Migrations

The Duhks are part of a small number of young North American bands who are melding traditional influences with contemporary stylings; while it's easy to group them Nickel Creek, The Mammals and Crooked Still, this Canadian 5 piece have a distinct.... full review

Nanci Griffith - Ruby's Torch

Backed her Blue Moon Orchestra this new album is a collection of 'torch songs' (def. sentimental songs, often where the singer laments unrequited love), but rather than picking an array of well known songs she's chosen an eclectic selection.... full review

Merrie Amsterburg - Clementine and other Stories

Almost 6 years since her last release, Clementine is celebrated singer/songwriter Merrie’s third solo album and one that marks a slight departure from her two previous albums. Rather than being a straight contemporary folk disc, Clementine.... full review

The Kennedys - Songs of the Open Road

Prolific they may be, but every one of The Kennedys discs (this is their ninth album) has something to offer – while their trademark 60’s folk/rock sound of jangly guitars and tight harmonies has been ever present, the material has always a.... full review

The Halliard - The Last Goodnight!

The Halliard (Nic Jones, Dave Moran & Nigel Paterson) recorded these 15 songs as a demo for the famous Saga record label - the group were given a copy of the master tape, but the album was never released.
Recorded in 1968, the.... full review

Megson - EP

Megson's excellent debut album 'On the Side' remains one of the best self produced and released discs we carry, and since the release of that album they've picked up universally strong reviews from press and fellow musicians, and have steadily.... full review

Loomer - Songs of the Wild West Island

Loomer's debut album 'Love is a Dull Instrument' arrived on my desk in 2004, and although I loved the disc we had too many releases to deal with and passed on the opportunity to carry it. Two years on I still listen to the album.... full review

Chris Smither - Leave the Light On

Chris Smither has been a mainstay on the American folk/blues scene for may years, releasing consistently strong albums and constantly touring – this new album highlights exactly why he’s been so successful over the years as it’s..... full review
