Fish Records Mailer - Issue 39 (Apr/May 2006)

After a stunning list of releases for the early part of 2006, the pace is kept up with another memorable list of discs from significant artists including Seth Lakeman, Karine Polwart, Cara Dillon and Chuck Brodsky, and an excellent disc from a new artist, Laura Cortese. Just as this catalogue was going to print we received the new discs from Kris Delmhorst, Josh Ritter and Jeffrey Foucault – we’ve not had time to review them, but have included them as they’ll all be available over the next few weeks (reviews to follow in issue 40)


Sarah Harmer - I'm A Mountain

While Sarah's previous two albums were both excellent singer/songwriter discs, her sound was slowly moving away from her earlier acoustic style and towards a more produced feel. The release of 'I'm A Mountain' marks a firm step.... full review

Cara Dillon - After the Morning

Cara’s two previous discs were excellent contemporary folk albums that focused on folk songs and her beautiful vocals, there were occasional hints at a more upbeat sound in places, but in general they were quite simple acoustic affairs..... full review

Excellent album from Canadian fiddle player and songwriter April Verch - the album is a balanced mix of singer/songwriter material and virtuoso instrumentals. The title track (along with two others) is from the pen of Julie Miller.... full review

Chuck Brodsky - Tulips for Lunch

Over the course of the past 10 years or so Chuck has released a collection of discs that stand up against the output of the very best folk singer/songwriters. His early albums contained some stunning tracks with biting sarcastic lyrics.... full review

Brian Joseph - If I Never Sleep Again (signed copies)

The title track from Brian’s previous album ‘King of Echo Park’ is a beautifully tender song about the joys and fears of parenthood; it’s an excellent track that gets the message across without being sickly sweet. ‘If I Never Sleep Again’.... full review

Jeffrey Foucault - Ghost Repeater

A simply stunning album from Jeffrey Foucault - lyrically one of the best he's one of the best writers around, but the addition of Bo Ramsey as producer has given his music a lighter more accessible feel that makes this....full review

Stunning, beautiful new album from Josh Ritter - this disc has a rougher edge than his two previous discs and it's an approach that suits the songs perfectly as this disc has a more political feel and contains a couple of.... full review
