Fish Records Mailer - Issue 38 (Feb/Mar 2006)

The first mailer of the year is generally one of the best as it contains discs from the back end of one year along with the new releases from the first few months of the next. This first mailer of 2006 is exceptional because it contains an even stronger selection than usual with superb albums from Crooked Still, Alana Levandoski and Christina Kulukundis. Mark Erelli’s ‘Hope and Other Casualties’ is the real standout, it’s truly stunning and one of the best albums we’ve ever carried…not to be missed!

Mark Erelli - Hope and Other Casualties

The artwork of this, Mark’s 5th album pays homage to Dylan’s ‘The Times They Are A-Changin' cover art, and while that makes a bold statement about the disc, it’s one that he carries off throughout the 11 tracks. ‘Hope and Other Casualties’ is a.... full review

Alana Levandoski - Unsettled Down

Although ‘Unsettled Down’ may be Canadian Levandoski’s debut release, this album of folk/country songs is a fully rounded and accomplished collection. The tracks are mainly acoustic guitar based with traditional.... full review

Christina Kulukundis - Christina Kulukundis

While this may be Christina’s debut disc, it’s an assured and confident album with a strong mixture of self-written tracks and well chosen covers. Being brought up between the US and the UK has a subtle but noticeable influence.... full review

Steve Tilston - Of Many Hands

Steve Tilston is an artist who I’ve long admired; an exceptional guitarist and a strong songwriter whose albums compare favourably against many of the more well known American folk/singer-songwriter discs we carry.... full review

Rosie Thomas - If Songs Could Be Held

Rosie’s previous two albums were simple, quiet and introspective collections full of sweet melodies and delicate songs, and to a certain extent this theme continues on ‘If Songs Could Be Held’ but there’s a new depth.... full review

Winterpills - Winterpills

Winterpills are a 4 piece band consisting of Philip Price, Flora Reed, Dave Hower and Dennis Crommett; they mix contemporary acoustic folk songs with pop influences and a good degree of inventiveness.
This is an album with.... full review

Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart - S & M Communion Bread

The title may raise an eyebrow and bring about the odd smirk, but that's just about where the levity ends as 'S & M Communion Bread' is a pretty serious album, it's not all bleak but it's certainly occasionally dark in tone.... full review

£13.49

Vienna Teng - Warm Strangers

Originally released in the US in 2004 it’s taken a while for this, her second album, to reach Europe; but in this case, late is better than never as it’s an album that really deserves to be heard, and an excellent and diverse collection.... full review

Crooked Still - Hop High

Traditional music, be it from the UK or the US is always evolving with new artists putting their own twist on the songs and tunes laid down by those before them. As young artists emerge on the scene each one adds their own accent.... full review

Lucy Kaplansky - The Tide (remastered plus 2 tracks)

A newly remastered, special edition of Lucy's excellent debut album from 1994, produced by Shawn Colvin (who also appears on many tracks) this is an excellent contemporary folk album that has stood the test of time.... full review
