Fish Records Mailer Issue 26 (Oct /Nov 2003)

The summer months may have been a quiet time for new releases, but September has more than made up for it with at least 6 significant releases, and some of the best albums of the year. Our lead album, Josh Ritter’s ‘Hello Starling’ is a tremendous piece of work; intelligent, musical, easy to enjoy and with broad appeal – it looks certain to reach a wider audience over the coming months. The new Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman is also excellent, as are the discs from Kate Rusby, John Gorka, Kris Delmhorst and the debut album from Canadian singer/songwriter Linda McLean. These discs cover the full range of styles we carry, and it should be easy for anyone to find a great disc in whatever style they choose. Enjoy!

Josh Ritter – Hello Starling

Josh’s previous release ‘Golden Age of Radio’ is one of my personal favourites from the past couple of years, and it deservedly continues to find new listeners as his profile increases, this was certainly helped by a song from the.... full review

Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman - Two

Over the past few years Kathryn & Sean’s debut duo disc (‘One’) has never been far away from my CD player, and it’s probably the album I’ve listened to more than any other over this period – so the arrival of this second disc is.... full review

Linda McLean – Betty’s Room

A chance conversation with a distributor resulted in a copy of this disc arriving the next day – no press sheet, no biography, just the disc; searches for reviews and background information on Linda have proved fairly fruitless.... full review

Kris Delmhorst - Songs for a Hurricane

Kris’ last album ‘Five Stories’ was one of the best releases of 2001, a distinct singer/songwriter album that’s creative and edgy as well as being melodically and lyrically excellent – ‘Songs for a Hurricane’ is all this and much.... full review

Kate Rusby - Underneath the Stars

Kate's debut solo album 'Hourglass' is a superb album, striking in the simplicity of her beautiful vocals and the restrained acoustic backing; the two subsequent discs are more musically sophisticated and adventurous, and while.... full review

John Gorka – Old Futures Gone

John Gorka was one of the leading lights in the 80s New Folk movement that directly influenced most of the US singer/songwriters we carry, and his own output since then has been uniformly strong – so this follow up to.... full review

Clare Burson – The In-Between

The press release that accompanies this self released singer/songwriter disc provides real illumination into the album and offers markers as to how the distinct feel of the disc was developed.... full review

Claire Holley – Dandelion

Claire Holley’s fourth album ‘Dandelion’ has a wonderful atmosphere to it, it’s easy going, relaxed and has a natural feel and flow that works from the very first listen. Much of this is down to her vocals – she has a warm and pure voice.... full review

Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem – Gambling Eden

Rani fronted the excellent ‘Salamander Crossing’ in the 90s, and this is her second album with her band ‘Daisy Mayhem’, a group of three men, rather than a second female artist as the name suggests. Describing the.... full review

Bill Jones – Two Year Winter

After her first two enjoyable and promising studio albums, this new disc is where her obvious talent and the past few years experience have come together – resulting in a stronger, more mature, and consistently.... full review
