Eilen Jewell – Butcher Holler

Named after the small Kentucky town where Loretta Lynn was raised, this side project of Eilen Jewell sees her take a small detour from her regular country - singer/songwriter output, to create a unique 12 track tribute to Loretta Lynn.

Jewell and her long time band of Jason Beek (drums, vocals), Johnny Sciascia (upright bass) and Jerry Miller (guitars) take a mixture of Lynn’s familiar and lesser-known songs and present them to a new audience.  Lynn’s output from the 60s and 70s was a controversial as it was successful, she wrote songs that broke boundaries and were generally considered off-limits for women; it resulted in many of songs being banned from radio play, but brought many unspoken issues into wider view.

Jewell takes on the voice of the no-nonsense narrators in these songs and on three of Lynn’s biggest hits, ‘Fist City’, ‘You Ain’t Woman Enough (to take my man)’ & Don’t Come Home A’Drinkin’ (with Lovin’ on Your Mind)’ she shows the timeless qualities of her superb songwriting.

‘Butcher Holler’ is not just a run through Lynn’s biggest hits as she works through a good number of lesser known, but equally strong tracks; but whichever songs Jewell is singing, her love and affection for the material is evident.  This may well be a small diversion and side-project in the career of Jewell, but it’s obviously a labour of love, that has resulted in an album of timeless songs.
