Eliza Carthy – Dreams of Breathing Underwater

 

Eliza is well respected as one of the most innovative folk performers in the UK, and while she usually works with traditional material, ‘Dreams of Breathing Underwater’ is her second album of her own songs.
Although no stranger to interesting arrangements, this album is certainly going to raise an eyebrow or two with the folk-police as it shows Eliza to be contemporary writer and musician with much in common with the writing and varied stylings of Kirsty MacColl than a traditional folk artist.

Eliza’s fiddle is still an obvious focus of the disc, but at times it takes a back seat to some of the original arrangements, there’s still an English feel to much of the album but influences from all over the world sneak in across the 11 songs, and there’s a sense of freedom and fun throughout.

This broad range of influences makes for an album that is full of surprises as it moves from salsa to swing, and from the electric guitar driven opening track to gentle ballads.

Picking highlights is challenging as there’s so much variety, but personal favourites include the swing influenced ‘Oranges & Seasalt’ which has the best vocal performance on the disc, and ‘Rosalie’ which is has a beautiful melody and arrangement.

Full of interesting rhythms and energy, ‘Dreams of Breathing Underwater’ is a dazzlingly vibrant album – the live show that will inevitably follow should be fantastic, but you’ll probably need to know the recorded work to make real sense of it!  Those with Catholic tastes, looking for something interesting and rewarding will love this disc – highly recommended, with the caveat that it’s probably unlike anything you’ve heard before (and surely that has to be A Good Thing).
